Adoption and Symbolism
New Mexico's first state flag was officially adopted on January 18, 1925, by the state legislature. The flag features the ancient Zia symbol, which represents the sun and the four sacred directions. The colors of the flag—red, gold, and turquoise—are symbolic of the state's natural features, including the mountains, desert, and skies.
Context and Design
A veteran of the First World War, Colonel Harry Mera, designed the flag. The original design included a black border around the Zia symbol, but this was removed in the final version. The flag is similar in style to the flags of other US southwestern territories, which often incorporate Native American motifs.
