New Jersey Earthquake Rocks Hunterdon County

4.8 Magnitude Quake Largest in State's History

Residents Urged to Be Aware of Potential Aftershocks

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on Friday, April 5, 2024, becoming the strongest temblor ever recorded in the state.

The quake, which occurred at 10:22 p.m. ET, was centered six kilometers west-southwest of Gladstone and was felt as far away as New York City and Philadelphia.

No injuries or major damage have been reported so far, but residents are being urged to stay alert for potential aftershocks.

The earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events that have been shaking the region in recent months. In December 2020, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake hit Hunterdon County, and a 2.8-magnitude quake struck Sussex County in February of this year.

Seismologists are still studying the cause of the quakes, but they say they are not related to any known fault lines.

Residents are encouraged to be prepared for aftershocks, which can occur for days or even weeks after a major earthquake.
