Chile's Time Adjustment: A Historical and Upcoming Change

Historical Origins

Chile's time adjustment has its roots in 1968. Edinson Román, an engineer from the now-defunct Chilectra company, proposed the idea to save on energy consumption. Since then, Chile has adjusted its clocks twice yearly, between summer and winter.

Upcoming Winter Time Change

The 2024 winter time adjustment will commence on Saturday, April 6. at 11:59 PM (local time), clocks will be turned back one hour.

This change affects mainland Chile, except for Easter Island and Salas y Gómez Island, which do not observe time adjustment.

Effects of Winter Time Adjustment

The shift to winter time typically brings increased daylight during the morning hours and shorter daylight in the evenings. It is implemented to conserve energy during the colder months when electricity usage for lighting is higher.

Conclusion

Chile's time adjustment is a long-standing practice aimed at energy conservation. The upcoming winter time change in April 2024 will continue this tradition, offering darker evenings and brighter mornings.
